What do you think of the informational tidbits/tangents on history (of the trail, of the National Park Service, etc.), geology (of Centralia and the mountainside in Lehigh Valley), ecology (the effects of global warming, zinc mining, dam building), and social customs (the interaction and views of different people) in the book? Did any ignite your interest? Which ones? Why?
I was particularly amazed at the fire in Centralia, Pennsylvania which literally burned for decades underground. I don’t remember ever hearing much about this. I am amazed that possibly something was mentioned in the news, but as ‘old news is no news’, it was never mentioned again.
I don’t ever recall hearing of this. Captured my attention and I immediately looked it up on the internet. It is still burning underground. I have mentioned this to a lot of people and no one I know has ever heard of it. Fascinating.
Yes, I felt really ignorant reading some of this stuff! Why hadn’t I heard of Centralia? I don’t have a lot of confience in the National Parks’ Administration after reading this either…. Made me mad!
