Yes – These men were not experienced hikers at the beginning of this trip. Better to change plans than not, then be miserable. They would feel like they quit when later discovering that accomplishing the whole thing was not possible for them at that time.
Yes. I don’t know of anyone that has done the entire trail. When I was in college we used to talk about it but we never had the time to devote to it.
